The sterling silver version is rhodium-plated. Rhodium is one of the rarest precious metals, a member of the platinum family, and it is the same bright white finish used on fine white gold jewelry. The silver is plated in white gold, polished, and then plated a second time in rhodium, so it is whiter and harder than bare silver and won't tarnish. In sterling silver it weighs about 62 grams (2.0 troy ounces).

Brass and bronze: They start out bright and deepen to a warm brown with wear. A jewelry polishing cloth brings the shine back in a minute. The copper in them can leave a harmless green mark on skin that washes off.

Gold-plated brass: The gold is real but thin. Keep it dry, put it on after lotion and perfume, and wipe it with a soft cloth. Skip polishing cloths and jewelry cleaner, which take the gold off.

Rhodium-plated silver: The silver is plated in white gold and then rhodium, which keeps it bright white and stops tarnish. Wash it with mild soap and a soft cloth. Skip silver polishing cloths and dips, which remove the plating.
